“I’m good.” I scanned the crowd quickly, my eyes flicking over families and lesbian couples of all ages and types. Normally I would have gone back to the Club downstairs during halftime to mingle with the scene. But today I wasn’t in the mood. I wanted to have Sam to myself. So when Mel texted, “Where R

U?!” I sent her back a note to the effect that Sam and I would not be joining them.

“2 bad,” she texted back. “K n i wr gonna trd w u 4 sec haf.”

Trade seats with us for the second half? I guess I didn’t have to have Sam all to myself. “How do you feel about braving the club scene again?” I asked her, tucking my phone back in my pocket.

She shrugged. “Whatever you want.”

Not whatever, I told myself, looking away from her lips.

Downstairs in the club, already packed with lesbians and their friends, we waded through the various cliques forming and reforming. Mel and Kristin were wedged in at a table in the lounge with a couple of sporty dykes I recognized from campus. A woman I didn’t know was there, too, tall and thin with multicolored tattoos peeking out from under her shirtsleeves and collar.

“Dude,” Mel said as we approached, and gave me a high five.

“Did you see Johnson drop when Monique threw that elbow in the first quarter?”

“Totally, man,” I said, nodding at the U-Dub girls. “What’s up? This is Sam.”

Introductions made their way around the circle. Somehow Bree, the tattoo chick, ended up maneuvering herself between Sam and me as I greeted Kristin. “I like your necklace,” I heard her say, eyes on the jade stone suspended at the hollow of Sam’s throat.

As Sam thanked her politely but unenthusiastically, Kristin and Mel and I traded tickets for the second half. Then Kris leaned in and murmured, “Don’t worry. Sam strikes me as the kind of girl who can take care of herself.”
